WorkCover authorises over 300 medical practitioners located around the state who are known as WorkCover Authorised Medical Practitioners (AMPs) and Dr S Thava Seelan is one of these.

The AMPs are used by employers and/or employees who require either medical surveillance or contact with a GP who has a knowledge of OHS issues.

AMPs have a proven capability in occupational medicine by either being fellows of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational & Environmental Medicine (AFOEM) or have passed a course and examination approved by WorkCover and run through the University of NSW.

WorkCover will advise on, either directly or through the AMPs or on the following topics:

• occupational cancer and carcinogens
• reproductive effects of chemicals
• lead
• spray painting
• electro-plating
• pesticides
• solvents and toxic metals
• hazardous dusts
• occupational asthma
• occupational dermatitis
• zoonotic diseases – Q-fever, leptospirosis, psittacosis, anthrax, tetanus, brucellosis, toxoplasmosis, hydatid disease, etc.
• infectious diseases – pandemics, influenza, CJD, MRSA, needlestick injuries, etc.
• occupational health surveillance
• hazardous substances and
• biological monitoring.
